Getting a cat is an important step. Your Maine Coon will spend the next 15 or even more years next to you, so let's talk about what you need to pay attention to BEFORE you make the ultimate decision to bring a kitten into your house.
What Is Important to Know When Choosing a Maine Coon
Maine Coons are very social, curious, and love to participate in various activities.
You can take them on a walk or bring them along on a trip with you, and that is also important.
It takes them a while to mature – up to two or even three years, like a human child. You will be pleasantly surprised by what a great memory little Maine Coons have and how logical their actions are. It's enough to show them just a few times (and sometimes even once) where the toilet, food or their cat house is, and they will master them fast. That is why you shouldn't punish them if they are doing something wrong in your opinion. It is worth analyzing and trying to find a reason of such behavior, what your cat is trying to communicate to you. There can be multiple reasons and not all of them are obvious. For example, a cat is doing its business next to the litter box or in a different spot entirely. The first thing you need to pay attention to is whether the cat has permanent access to their litter box and how far it is located. Kittens don't have a fully formed bladder yet (just like small children) and sometimes they simply can't get to the toilet in time, so they use something soft and available instead. Or it can be an unknown cat litter – noisy and unfamiliar. A second litter box can solve this problem. Maine Coons are very quick-witted. If they try to sharpen their claws where you don't want them to, show them the scratcher – and so on.

Maine Coons are domestic and lazy, they love their homes, but they will never turn down a walk. They are human oriented, eager to play and participate in everything, but to an extent. They adapt to their owner's mood. Love to rest together.
They welcome people home just like dogs. And they love to unpack grocery shopping bags. They will sit nearby while you cook and control whether you are using the correct ingredients for the recipe. They enjoy watching interesting TV shows, especially nature documentaries.
What Not to Expect from a Maine Coon
They will not spend all their time on your lap. Maine Coons love to socialize, not just be held in your hands like a pillow. They enjoy sitting next to you, following you around the house and the garden, talking and purring.
What Gender to Choose
One of the frequently asked questions is who to choose – a boy or a girl? Every little Maine Coon already has a personality with their own character traits unlike any other, even while sharing common breed qualities. I can already see the initial differences between kittens as early as at the age of four weeks. One will be very active, another will be calm, the third one is a bit shy, and so on.
That is why I ask you to describe your lifestyle (questionnaire – lifestyle description), so that we could choose your perfect pet together. I can advise which kitten will be the best fit based on your interests and lifestyle regardless of their gender. The important thing is that after neutering gender differences are alleviated.
Still, there is one important difference between male and female cats. Females are smaller in size in comparison with males. This breed has pronounced sexual dimorphism, so female cats are significantly smaller than male cats.
The Process of Reserving a Kitten and a Wait List
Usually we don't have kittens available, they are all reserved before birth. After the birth, at about four to five weeks we have a video call where I show you the kittens and we discuss anything you want to know.
There are a lot of cases of "love at first sight" and this is my most favorite and magical part in my breeding program. Those are the moments that make me want to build my cattery further, to bring more joy to people. I don't know how this magic works, but usually future owners pick kittens with their heart and those are exactly the kittens I want to offer them. In all my breeding career not a single new cat parent was disappointed by the choice of their kitten. Everyone's feedback is how perfect their pet is.
Normally, our kittens are sold as pets but there's always an option of participating in a TICA or CFA show.
Kitten's Age
Kittens from our cattery move to their new homes after they are three, three and a half months old when they are neutered and spayed. More details about early sterilization in our FAQs. Our kittens are vaccinated according to their age. The first shot is given at the age of two months (eight weeks), booster shot in two weeks, and then the third shot in another two weeks. At the age of 13 weeks, they are neutered and spayed, as well as vaccinated against rabies and given a chip if their new owners prefer one. And only after being quarantined a new kitten can go to their new home.
A lot of people who wish to get a Maine Coon are surprised and even upset that they can't take them home here and now. There are several reasons for that.
The first one is vaccination. A kitten who hasn't gotten their shots has a great chance of getting sick. As a breeder, I have a responsibility to give you a healthy, strong kitten so that you could enjoy each other's company and only visit your vet for regular checkups and not for treating a disease.
The second reason is that kittens should stay with their mom for as long as possible, even though they can be offered additional food at the age of three to four weeks. They still must be breastfed till at least two, two and a half months. The longer kittens feed on their mother's milk, the healthier they are.
The third reason is socialization. Until three months old kittens require their mother's company. They also learn to play safely with their siblings, without using their claws. I train kittens to travel in a car, to walk in the backyard, to be in a company of our two toy poodles, as well as to be familiar with different sounds. They also learn to communicate with our son and to be gentle. Taking kittens away from their mother before 12 weeks old is a huge stress for both kittens and their cat mom. I promise you, you will have enough time to enjoy your time with your Maine Coon kitten since they stay kittens for a long time even despite their impressive size. So do not be afraid to buy a five- or six-month-old animal. They will be the same little kid as a kitten at the age of twelve weeks.
Visiting Our Cattery
I provide an online meeting during which you can choose your kitten. Thanks to modern technologies, we have comfortable and convenient communication. And you have an opportunity to observe our kittens in their comfortable environment, with their mother and siblings. Often kittens can get scared of a new person in real life, they need time to adapt. That is why online format is the most optimal. We can discuss all the moments you are interested in, and I can show you how comfortable our other cats are with us, how they prefer to spend their time in the backyard or with each other.
Welcome to our cattery and Maine Coon community. If this kitten is going to be your first Maine Coon, you will be forever captivated by this amazing breed.
